[Beta-Defensin-123] DEFB123 is a Beta-Defensin with antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. The gene has been characterized by Radhakrishnan et al (2005).
DEFB123 has been shown to prevent TNF-alpha secretion in a murine monocyte cell line (RAW264.7) treated with bacterial lipopolysaccharides and can prevent mortality in C57BL/6 mice induced by LPS (Motzkus et al, 2006). These authors have suggested that the physiological role may include interference with LPS action on macrophages
