[Death effector domain-containing testicular molecule] The protein has been identified independently as DEDD.
DEFT transcripts are expressed in a variety of human and rat tissues, with particularly abundant expression in testis germ cells. The protein contains a death effector domain with a high degree of homology to a similar sequence motif in FADD and the inactive polypeptide precursors (zymogen) of caspase-8 and caspase-10. Overexpression of DEFT does not induce cell death by apoptosis in Chinese hamster ovary cells. Its role in apoptotic processes remains to be elucidated.
