[deoxyribonuclease 2] DNase 2 (EC3.1.22.1) is called also acid DNase as it hydrolyzes DNA under acidic conditions. The protein is a ubiquitously expressed lysosomal enzyme and has been called also lysosomal DNase 2 (abbr. DNL2).
The gene has been cloned by Yasuda et al (1998). The mature protein of 253 amino acids arises by processing of a 360 amino acid precursor that includes a signal sequence of 16 amino acids and propeptide region of 91 amino acids.
Studies with knock-out mice lacking expression of the enzyme have shown that the enzyme is absolutely required for erythropoiesis in mouse
