DPC-4

[deleted in pancreatic carcinoma 4] DCP-4 is a putative tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 18q21.1 that may be a candidate for pancreatic carcinoma. Gene deletions are found in 25 of 84 tumors. 6 of 27 carcinomas without deletions contain mutations (Hahn et al, 1996). DPC-4 inactivation appears to be prevalent in pancreatic carcinoma (48 %), but is uncommon (less than 10 %) in other tumor types (Schutte et al, 1996). Thiagalingam et al (1996) have reported deletion of DPC-4 in approximately one third of sporadic colon cancers. Parsons et al (1995) have reported that in colon cancer, 38 % of sporadic cases show loss of DPC-4 protein. Kim et al (1996) have reported that DPC-4 is altered only infrequently in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. Mutations in the DPC-4 gene have been associated also with juvenile polyposis and gastrointestinal cancer (Friedl et al, 1999, 2002; Howe et al, 1998).
