DSL
an abbreviation derived from Delta (delta-1), Serrate (jagged-1), and Lag-2, all of which have been shown to function as ligands for the Notch protein, thereby regulating the differentiation of many different cell types during metazoan development (Lissemore and Starmer, 1999).
DSL proteins are characterized by the presence of a unique and conserved DSL sequence motif and also contain a variable number of tandemly repeated copies of an EGF-like repeat.
The lin-12 gene found in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been shown to encode a member of the Notch family of proteins.
