[death-upregulated gene] The gene encoding DUG has been isolated from rat insulinoma cells. DUG is expressed constitutively at very low levels in normal cells. Expression is upregulated dramatically in cells undergoing apoptosis in response to serum/glucose starvation treatment of cells with FAS ligand. In cells engineered to overexpress DUG, the factor inhibits both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis. Sequence analysis shows that DUG is the rat counterpart of PDCD4 [programmed cell death-4].
