This term pertains to a distinct phenotype of microglial cells found in high numbers in nonhomeostatic conditions (e. g., Alzheimer's disease pathology, aging, chronic stress, maternal immune activation model, fractalkine signaling deficiency). These cells show a gene expression profile that differs from that of normal microglial cells and are found in various brain regions, where they are frequently seen interacting with blood vessels
