Defensin A

This term has been used for a natural insect defensin from the fleshfly Phormia terranovae (Dimarcq et al, 1990; Lepage et al, 1991). Defensin A is an inducible cationic protein secreted in the hemolymph of fleshfly Phormia terranovae larvae in response to bacterial or septic injuries. The peptide shows significant homology to microbicidal cationic peptides from mammalian granulocytes (see: Defensins) (Lambert et al, 1989).

Homologous proteins, also referred to as Defensin A have been identified in the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Chalk et al, 1995; Cho et al, 1996). The Aedes aegypti defensin A (abbr. AaDefA) is also being referred to as Defensin A (abbr. Def1, DefA). For a closely related defensin see also: Defensin B.
