This term has been used for a natural insect defensin from the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Chalk et al, 1995). Defensin B is the most abundant antibacterial peptide in this species and differs from defensin A, which is much less abundant, by two amino acid substitutions, which make the protein more basic in character.
