Dermal papilla cells are a population of mesenchymal cells in the skin. They play a pivotal role in the regulation of hair follicle growth, formation, and cycling, mainly through paracrine mechanisms (for overview see: Driskell et al, 2011).

Dermal papilla cells are thought to be a reservoir of multipotent stem cells. Dermal papilla cells expressing the transcription factor SOX2 have been shown to be the origin of multipotent SKPs [skin-derived progenitor cells] (Fernandes et al, 2004; Biernaskie et al, 2009; Lavoie et al, 2009; Toma et al, 2001), which can be generated from rodent skin and human hair follicle dermal papilla cells [ ... ... ... ... ...
