COPE began as a simple Dictionary of Cytokines and growth factors (read Some personal remarks if you care to get an idea of how this bioinformatics initiative began). The COPE project gradually grew in scope and now goes beyond the simple use of soluble and membrane-bound factors and embraces many of the various other aspects of communication networks that underly contact and non-contact cell-to-cell communication (for recent and exciting aspects see also communication by microparticles, which may contain classical cytokines but also microRNAs, as well as the growing number of examples of classical proteins giving rise to bioactive fragments; see: cryptides).
