A 29 kDa protein expressed in murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells. The factor promotes a significant increase in the rate of hexamethylenebisacetamide induced differentiation of these cells. Following MEL cell stimulation with the chemical inducer, this factor is secreted in large amounts in the extracellular medium.
The factor is identical with the nonhistone chromosomal protein HMG-1 (known also as amphoterin or Neurite growth-promoting protein), a 30 kDa heparin binding protein from developing rat brain (see also: HBGF [heparin binding growth factors]). Amphoterin enhances neurite outgrowth in cerebral neurons
