Distinctin

Distinctin is a 5.4 kDa heterodimeric disulfide-bonded peptide (A chain: ENREVPPGFTALIKTLRKCKII) and B chain: NLVSGLIEARKYLEQLHRKLKNCKV) with antimicrobial activity from the skin granular glands of the tree frog Phyllomedusa distincta (Batista et al, 2001). Evaristo et al (2013) have cloned the cDNAs encoding distinctin from the frog Phyllomedusa burmeisteri and have shown that chains A and B are encoded by separate mRNAs. Distinctin predominantly exists as a heterodimer (A-B). Neither of the constituent peptides are detected as monomers, and of the two possible homodimers (A-A or B-B), only B-B is detected in comparatively low quantity.
