Dlxin-1

Dlxin-1 has been identified by Masuda et al (2001) as a protein that regulates the transcriptional function of the homeodomain protein Dlx5, which plays a critical role in bone development and fracture healing. The protein shows extensive homolgy with Necdin.

The Dlxin-1 gene is expressed in various adult tissues, but not the spleen, and also in osteoblastic and chondrogenic cell lines. Shiras et al (2001) have cloned the Dlxin-1 gene and observed strong expression in mouse brain and embryos. Transcripts were detected only in sarcomas and neuroectodermal tumors, but not in lymphomas, leukaemias, adenocarcinomas, and carcinomas. Ectopic expression of the protein leads to growth suppression.

Sequence comparisons show that this protein is the same as NRAGE.
