[Double bouquet cell]
This cell type represents a type of inhibitory interneuron in the cortex and was described first by Santiago Ramón y Cajal in human brain (De Felipe and Jones, 1988). The name reflects the characteristic morphology with a vertical bitufted appearance resembling two bouquets of flowers. Double bouquet cells have a tight bundle of vertically oriented axons (generally termed "bundles" or "horse-tails") and make contacts with other double bouquet cells and cortical neurons (DeFelipe et al, 2006; Peters A and Sethares C, 1997).
Ferrer I and Sancho S (1987) have distinguished type I double-bouquet cells with long ascending and descending axons and multipolar neurons with long tufted descending axons (
