approved gene symbol: DST. Dystonin is a cytoskeletal linker protein that forms a bridge between F-actin and intermediate filaments. The protein belongs to the family of cytoskeletal cross-linking proteins known as spectraplakins (Roper et al, 2002). Dystonin is essential for maintaining neuronal cytoskeleton organization (Dalpe et al, 1998). Bernier et al (1998) have reported that Dystonin is an essential component of the Schwann cell cytoskeleton at the time of myelination. Carlsten et al (2001) have reported that the absence of dystonin results in the selective survival of NGF responsive neurons and the postnatal degeneration of many NT-3 and GDNF responsive neurons.
