This designation pertains to an open reading frame encoding a protein that is conserved in all poxviruses (Poxvirus E10R protein, Vaccinia virus E10R protein, Variola virus E10R protein). The encoded protein is a member of the ERV1 / ALR family represented in all eukaryotes. The protein is considered to be the viral counterpart of mammalian hepatopoietin (alternatively named ALR [Augmenter of liver regeneration].
