[Eosinophil-activating factor] This protein of approximately 40 kDa is found the serum of individuals with Schistosoma mansoni infections and in conditioned medium of cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells from moderately eosinophilic individuals.
EAF is secreted also upon stimulation by TNF-alpha of a hybrid cell line produced by fusing human cervical keratinocytes with HeLa cells. High levels of EAF are produced by mononuclear cells of some, but not by all, asthma patients. Incubation of mononuclear cells with certain allergens enhances EAF production in sensitive individuals.
