EC-SP cells

[endothelial cell side population cells; side population endothelial cells] abbr. also spEC [stem/progenitor-like endothelial cells]. This cell type with characteristics of endothelial progenitor cells / stem cells is located at the inner surface of pre-existing blood vessels (Naito et al (2012). This population is dormant in the steady state but possesses the ability to form colonies in a colony formation assay, produces large numbers of endothelial cells, and when transplanted into ischaemic lesions, restores blood flow completely and reconstitutes de-novo long-term surviving blood vessels.
