[eosinophil chemotactic cytokine-L; T-lymphocyte-derived eosinophil chemotactic factor] ECF-L was purified from the conditioned medium of murine splenocytes (Owhashi et al, 2000). The cDNA sequence predicts a mature protein of 397 amino acids. ECF-L mRNA is expressed highly in spleen, bone marrow, lung, and heart.
ECF-L contains a consensus CXC sequence near the amino terminus akin to chemokines, the rest of ECF-L shows poor homology with chemokines. Sequence analysis reveals that ECF-L is a chitinase family protein (Oba et al, 2003), retaining those amino acids highly conserved among chitinase family proteins. The protein does not have chitinase activity and is described in databanks as CHI3L3 [
