[esophageal cancer-related gene 4] This gene has been cloned by Yue et al (2003) from normal human esophageal epithelium. The gene is known also as C2ORF40 [chromosome 2 open reading frame 40] and encodes a highly conserved protein of 148 amino acids. ECRG4 protein has characteristic features of a preprohormone and contains at least one prohormone cleavage site (see: Augurin at the end of this entry).
Lee et al (2015) have reported that ECRG4 knock-out mice are viable and fertile with no apparent developmental defects.
