[EMI domains]
This protein domain of approximately 80 amino acids is named after Emilin [elastin microfibril interfase located protein], an elastic fiber-associated secreted glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix, in which it was observed first. EMI domains are cysteine-rich and are located always at the N-terminus of proteins in which they occur (Doliana et al, 2000) . These domain are protein-protein interaction modules thought to participate in multimerisation of proteins.
It has been demonstrated that the EMI domain of Emilin-1 binds the proform of TGF-beta-1, thereby preventing its proteolytic processing into the mature and active cytokine (Zacchigna et al, 2006).
