[Endoplasmic reticulum-to-nucleus signaling 2] This protein is being referred to also as IRE1B [IRE1-beta; Inositol-requiring protein 1-beta] or IRE2 [Inositol-requiring protein 2].
ERN2 is a transmembrane Serine/threonine-protein kinase / endoribonuclease that induces translational repression through 28S ribosomal RNA cleavage in response to endoplasmic reticulum stress (Iwawaki et al, 2001). The protein is a homolog of a Saccharomyces cerevisia gene that functions as a sensor for the unfolded protein response, monitoring the status of unfolded protein inside the ER lumen.
