ERN2 is a transmembrane Serine/threonine-protein kinase / endoribonuclease that induces translational repression through 28S ribosomal RNA cleavage in response to endoplasmic reticulum stress (Iwawaki et al, 2001). The protein is a homolog of a Saccharomyces cerevisia gene that functions as a sensor for the unfolded protein response, monitoring the status of unfolded protein inside the ER lumen.
