Endocan is the new name given by Bechard et al (2001) to a protein identified originally as ESM-1 [endothelial cell-specific molecule 1] by Lassalle et al (1996) who described constitutive expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and constitutive expression in human lung. The expression of endocan in endothelial cells is upregulated in response to TNF-alpha or IL1-beta, but not with IL4 or IFN-gamma.
Analysis of ESM-1 expression in normal human tissues by immunohistochemistry showed that endocan is localized in the vascular network, but also in the bronchial and renal epithelia
