This inhibitor is isolated from conditioned medium of cultures of human leukocytes after cell activation. It acts as a potent inhibitor of the proliferation of endothelial cells.
The inhibitor is a derivative of platelet factor-4 (see: PF4) and is generated by cleavage between Thr-16 and Ser-17. The processed PF4 exhibits a 30- to 50-fold greater growth inhibitory activity on endothelial cells than PF4.
