also: entotic cell death. Entosis has been described as a form of cellular cannibalism (cell-cell cannibalism) in lymphoblasts from patients with Huntington's disease (Mormone et al, 2006). The term type 4 programmed cell death (type 4 cell death) has been suggested for Entosis (Martins et al, 2017).
Entosis was described originally as a process of cell-in-cell invasion, a transient state in which a live cell is contained within a host cell and live internalised cells are either degraded by lysosomal enzymes or released (Overholtzer et al, 2007) (for comparison see also: emperipolesis). The authors have suggested that entosis may represent an intrinsic tumor suppression mechanism for cells
