[epithelial mitogen] abbr. EPG or EPGN. The cDNA for this factor was isolated from a gene library obtained from mouse keratinocytes due to its homology with the EGF family of growth factors (Strachan et al, 2001). Epigen encodes a protein of 152 amino acids. The gene is expressed in testis, heart, and liver. In epithelial cells, Epigen stimulates the phosphorylation of erbB1 and mitogen-activated protein kinases. Epigen stimulates the proliferation of epithelial cells.
