[Escherichia coli-secreted protein J] This virulence factor, encoded by a cryptic prophage, is found in enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (Dahan et al, 2005). EspJ is not required for attaching and effacing lesion activity in vivo and ex vivo but influences the dynamics of clearance of the pathogen from the intestinal tract and may play a role in host survival and pathogen transmission.
