This non-lymphoid leukemic cell line has been established from a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that progressed to overt leukemia (Chiba et al, 1991). The cells are absolutely dependent on GM-CSF or IL3 for continuous growth (see also: factor-dependent cell lines). A subline, designated F-36E, can be maintained in the presence of erythropoietin alone. Both cell lines die after growth factor withdrawal and this cannot be overcome by addition of fetal calf serum.
F-36P cells express CD45, CD13, CD33, and CD34
