FAS-beta is generated by alternative splicing of the FAS antigen mRNA (see also: APO-1).
P815 mastocytoma cells transfected with FAS-beta become resistant to cell death by apoptosis induced by FAS ligand. Resistance is mediated by a secreted product of the transfected cells.
In vivo, FAS-beta mRNA expression is correlated inversely with apoptosis among subsets of intrahepatic T-lymphocytes known to be a cell population in which activation induced T-cell apoptosis occurs. FAS-beta may thus be a cytokine that acts physiologically to limit apoptosis induced by FAS ligand.
For other entries pertaining to cell death mechanisms see also the Apoptosis Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
