[FERM domains]
Also: ERM homology domain, named after the proteins in which this domain was observed first (erythrocyte protein 4.1 (Four-point-one), ezrin, radixin, moesin) (Chishti et al, 1998). The ERM protein family members ezrin, radixin, and moesin are cytoskeletal effector proteins contain a C-terminal F-actin binding segment and a conserved N-terminal FERM domain that functions as a common membrane binding module by directly interacting with the cytoplasmic domains of integral membrane proteins. The FERM domain binds Phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns(4,5)P2) and membrane proteins in the plasma membrane and therefore can function also as a membrane-targeting domain
