[factor increasing monocytopoiesis] This biochemically uncharacterized factor is released by mouse and rabbit macrophages at the site of an inflammation upon ingestion of particulate and soluble material. FIM is secreted only during phagocytosis. FIM is released also by macrophages present at noninflamed sites (alveolar macrophages) and without phagocytosis. Resident peritoneal macrophages also release this factor after exposure to surfactant (Sluiter et al, 1988, 1987).
The factor accelerates the rate of division of the monoblasts and promonocytes in the bone marrow.
The factor is not identical with M-CSF,
