FIS1

(approved gene symbol) [fission 1 homolog; fission 1] FIS1 is known in databanks also as TTC1 [tetratricopeptide repeat domain 11] and is part of a complex involved in mitochondrial fission (James et al, 2003; Yoon et al, 2003), which is a process that is evolutionarily conserved (Jagasia et al, 2005) and universally associated with cell death (Suen et al, 2008). Downregulation of FIS1 has been shown to reduce apoptosis (Lee et al, 2004) and to require the endoplasmic reticulum gateway for apoptosis signaling (Alirol et al, 2006).
