These murine cells are used as model systems for studies of mast cell biology and biochemistry and to probe roles of mast cells under physiological and pathological conditions. For examples of mice lacking mast cells to probe their functions in vivo see: mast cell-deficient mice.
Although these cells belong to the mast cell lineage, they are transformed cells derived from an ascites type mastocytoma after successive cycles of translpalntation in mice (Nakamura et al, 1976). The cells show constitutive activation of the SCF receptor gene kit (Tsujimura et al (1996). The
