Factor XII

[coagulation factor XII] abbr. FXII, F12 (approved gene symbol). Factor XII is known mainly for its activity as a clotting factor (Hageman factor; abbr. HAF) (Ratnoff and Davie, 1964). In the nomenclature of enzymes the factor has been given the designation EC3.4.21.38.

Factor XII undergoes autocatalytic activation after binding to a negatively charged surface. This converts factor XII to factor XIIa (Silverberg et al, 1980).
