Fibrin fragment E is one of several fibrin degradation products generated by enzymatic cleavage of fibrin by plasmin and thrombin, particularly in areas of intense angiogenesis, for example in areas of wound healing and in active atherosclerotic plaques. Thrombin cleavage of fibrinogen removes the amino termini of both the alpha and beta chains, termed fibrinopeptide A and fibrinopeptide B, respectively, to yield fibrin monomers. Fibrin fragment E is generated when these monomers are cleaved by plasmin. Fibrin fragment E, therefore, differs from the related Fibrinogen fragment E
