This protein has been identified as an endogenous 29 kDa inhibitor of angiogenesis and tumor growth derived from the basement membrane (Bossard et al, 2004). Fibstatin is a fragment of human fibronectin containing the type III domains 12-14 (thus corresponding to FN III12-14 [fibronectin type 3 repeats 12-14]) (known also as FN heparin-binding domain 2 [Fibronectin heparin-binding domain 2]), which has been shown to be a promiscuous growth factor binding domain (see: fibronectin).
