[FMDV 2C protein] This nonstructural protein encoded by Foot and mouth disease virus. is a 318 amino acid protein that is essential for virus replication (Carrillo et al, 2005). The virus triggers the autophagy machinery, enhancing viral replication (35). The protein has been shown to bind to Beclin, a central regulator of the autophagy pathway. This prevents the fusion of lysosomes to autophagosomes and favours viral survival, possibvly by helping the virus escape the autophagy-induced protein degradation pathway. 2C mutations that disrupt the interaction between the viral protein and Beclin result in viruses completely unable to replicate in cell cultures (Gladue et al, 2012).
