This secreted protein of high molecular weight active against leukocytes from ruminants is encoded by the lktA operon of Fusobacterium necrophorum, a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium that is a primary or secondary etiological agent in a variety of necrotic purulent infections in animals and humans. Leukotoxin is considered the major virulence factor of this bacterium, but it is not a universal virulence factor in invasive Fusobacterium necrophorum infections in animals and man (Ludlam et al, 2009). Narayanan et al (2001) have cloned the gene.
Narayanan et al (2002) have reported that Fusobacterium necrophorum leukotoxin induces activation and apoptosis of bovine leukocytes
