These pyloric endocrine cells with round granules of moderate size (0.2-0.4 micrometer) and variable electron density were called G cells, because they were thought to be the source of the hormone gastrin (Pearse et al, 1970).
These cells are located in the antral mucosa of the stomach in close proximity with D cells (Bordi et al, 2000). The cells produce gastrin and are thus being referred to also as gastrin cells (gastrin-producing cells) (Pearse and Bussolati, 1972). G cells can synthesize histamine at low levels and thus can be classified as APUD cells (Rubin and Schwartz, 1984).
