[GATA-binding protein 1] GATA-1 is a DNA-binding protein of the 'zinc finger' family that functions as a transcription factor (see also: gene expression). GATA-1 is a member of a gene family comprising two related factors, designated GATA-2 and GATA-3. The GATA factors share extensive homology in their DNA-binding domains and are coexpressed in erythroid cells and interact with a variety of other transcription factors (for overview see: Lowry and Mackay, 2006).
GATA-1 recognizes the general consensus motif 5'-[AT]GATA[AG]-3' and is expressed predominantly in erythroid cells. GATA-1 is expressed highly in the lineages
