[GATA-binding protein 3] A transcription factor belonging to the same Gene family as GATA-1 and GATA-2. The GATA factors share extensive homology in their DNA-binding domains and are coexpressed in erythroid cells.
Human GATA-3 is expressed most abundantly in T-cells and appears to play an important role in regulating the T-cell specific expression of T-cell receptor subunit genes. Functional GATA-3 binding sites have been identified also within murine CD8-alpha (see: CD8) and CD4 upstream regulatory sequences.
