This peptide with the sequence CGFECVRQCPERC has been identified by phage display selection. GFE-1 acts as a lung targeting peptide can selectively bind to mouse lung vasculature after intravenous injection (Rajotte et al, 1998). A second peptide, termed GFE-2 (CGFELETC) also shows targeting of lung tissue but to a much lower extent than GFE-1 (Rajotte et al, 1998)
Rajotte D and Ruoslahti (1999) have identified membrane dipeptidase (MDP), a cell surface zinc metalloprotease involved in the metabolism of glutathione, leukotriene D4, and certain beta-lactam antibiotics, as the receptor for this peptide and shown that the peptide inhibits the dipeptidase activity.
