GIL blood group
This very high frequency blood group, described originally by Daniels et al (1998), has been shown to be due to mutations in the gene encoding AQP3 [aquaporin-3), which encodes a water and glycerol channel protein present on human erythrocytes and in various tissues. Some patients develop anti-GIL antibodies, which may be responsible for a hemolytic reactions after transfusion of GIL(+) red blood cells.
