[glucocorticoid modulatory element-binding protein 1] This protein has been isolated by Oshima et al (1995) as a factor binding to the so-called glucocorticoid modulatory element (GME) (which is the same as Cyclic AMP-responsive element (CRE). This DNA binding protein is thought to be involved in the modulation of other glucocorticoid-inducible genes in a variety of cells and the gene is expressed ubiquitously (Jimenez-Lara et al, 2000, Theriault et al, 1999). Thériault et al (1999) have identified the protein in a screen for interactors of hsp27 and cloned the gene. The protein has been shown to be a subunit of a DNA binding complex essential for parvovirus DNA replication and has been termed
