[G-protein-coupled receptor-50] The gene encoding this member of the family of G-protein-coupled receptors has been cloned originally as H9 by Reppert et al (1996). GPR50 is expressed in the pituitary, hypothalamus, and hippocampus of adult mammalian brain (Reppert et al, 1996; Sidibe et al, 2010; Hamouda et al, 2007; Batailler et al, 2012). The encoded protein shows approximately 45 % identity with melatonin receptors. The receptor does not bind melatonin but heterodimerizes with melatonin receptors (Levoye et al, 2006) and abolishes high-affinity agonist binding and G-protein coupling of one melatonin receptor (MTNR1A).
