[glucose-regulated protein-78; 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein] The approved gene symbol for this protein is HSPA5 [Heat shock 70 kDa protein 5]. The human gene has been cloned by Ting and Lee (1988). The protein has been identified originally as one of several proteins that show increased expression in Chinese hamster K123 cells following glucose starvation (Lee et al, 1983; Hendershot et al, 1994) and described independently as BiP [Immunoglobulin heavy chain-binding protein; H-chain-binding protein], a protein associated with non-transported immunoglobulin heavy chains and with assembling immunoglobulin precursors in pre-B lymphocytes
