[lectin galactoside-binding soluble 16; Galactoside-binding soluble lectin 16] This protein is being referred to also as LGALS16 (named by Than et al, 2009 for LOC148003). Galectin-16 binds lactose with high affinity. The protein is expressed predominantly and highly in syncytiotrophoblasts of the placenta and in the endothelia of fetal vessels. It is detected also in the amnion and chorionic trophoblasts in fetal membranes.
Than et al (2009) have shown that galectin-16 induces apoptosis of human CD3(+) T-cells, which may play a role in maternal-fetal immune tolerance.
