[Galectin-3 internal gene] Galig encodes a mitochondrial-targeted protein named mitogaligin. Galig is transcribed from the second intron of the human galectin-3 gene. Duneau et al (2005) have reported that expression of Galig causes morphological alterations in human cells, such as cell shrinkage, cytoplasm vacuolization, nuclei condensation, and ultimately cell death. These alterations are associated with extramitochondrial release of cytochrome C. The effect can be reduced significantly by co-expression of BCLxL but not by co-expression of BCL2. Gonzalez et al (2007) have reported that mitogaligin
