[Gaucher cell]
These cells are specialized macrophages found in Gaucher disease, a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the accumulation of glucosylceramide in macrophages as a result of a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase. (Elstein et al, 2001)
The term Gaucher-like cells (pseudo-Gaucher cells) refers to a cell type similar in many ways to true Gaucher on light microscopic examination, but Gaucher cells show diffuse iron staining, whereas pseudo-Gaucher cells are generally negative. Such cells have been observed in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, thalassemia, and multiple myeloma (Stewart and Jones, 1999).
